A tutoring project founded by me in 2019 to teach 12-15
years old students at a local public school in Brazil how
to code in Python.
About the project:
I was lucky enough to have had Computer Science classes and to learn Python when I was around 15 years old.
This was unfortunately not the case for the majority of students in Brazil, which is where the idea for Code Kids started.
Code Kids Organization was composed of around 7 highschool intructors who would go to
Colegio Maximiliano to deliver 1-hour lessons to students every week.
The impact of COVID:
When COVID hit, we decided to move online and to produce weekly YouTube lessons so that the students could continue progressing.
Some students did not have computers, and others didnt even have phones and had to use their parents'. For this reason, posting
lessons to YouTube allowed our students to view the content at their convinience.
We also started a fundraiser to raise money to improve technology at the school. We raised around $3500, which we used to buy new
desktops and projectors to donate to Colegio Maximiliano.
Now:
I am extremely proud of what Code Kids has achieved so far. Even though I am no longer physically in Brazil
guiding the group, I still try my best to keep in touch from a far. The current team members still attend Colegio Maximiliano
on a weekly basis, helping them learn and grow in the tech world.
